By One of the best things about editing is that you can do it from anywhere in the world. You can edit on your phone while sitting in your bathtub, with the click of a button. Or edit while you’re on vacation.
For the past year or so, I’ve been editing videos on my iphone. And I’m not just talking about editing out boring scenes in a movie or a video game. I mean editing out boring scenes that would otherwise ruin a movie. That’s what we’re referring to when we talk about editing.
It is easy to get caught up in the moment. We are often so caught up in the moment, we forget it is a moment. I know it sounds silly, but it is easy to get caught up in the moment. I know its not a good thing because we can be distracted by other things, but we should be aware that we cannot be distracted by stuff that we dont need to be distracted by.
The problem is when we are distracted by other things. If we are distracted by a video game, we are essentially working on that game at the same time. There is a world of difference between being a gamer and being a video game developer.
So in the end, we are in the same boat in terms of our work ethic, because we are working on the same thing, and yet we seem to be working at a different frequency than the people we work with. It is easy to think we’re working harder than those around us, because we’re just concentrating harder. But, in fact, our rate of productivity is more important than anything else we do.
Being a video game developer, you are in a very very small, very specific, very specific area of the business. So being a video game developer is a very specific position. That is true for the rest of our lives, not just in terms of our work ethic, but also in terms of what we are working on.
This is why I think so many people in our industry are so confused about the whole video game field. When people talk about their profession, they tend to be talking about what they are doing for a living. They don’t seem to understand that video game development is not just a job. It is a lifestyle.
Video games are a lifestyle. To a certain degree, it is a job. That is not to say that you don’t have the career goals of a successful working professional. You do. But, it’s a lifestyle. I don’t like the term “video game designer” because there are so many people in the video game industry who have a lot of experience as a gamer but are still trying to get their feet wet in the business.
But, thats not important. What is important is that anyone who works in the video game industry should understand that there are many different ways to do audio and video production. And that there is no one right way to produce video games. So, go read some of my interviews here and here and here.
And by reading them you can see why I like video games. I think it is because video gaming lets us get so close to the player. We can get to know the person that plays that game so well. And what happens when we learn what the player is thinking, feeling, and doing? What happens when we get to understand what makes the player tick. We can understand what he wants the world to be like and why he would want it to be like that.
