As a cinematographer and director, I have a very large set of criteria for what you should do. The first thing I look for is a good location. Because I want you to work hard to get that shot, I expect you to have a large set of shots that are close to eachother. I want your shots to be perfect, and I want you to create some sort of narrative that is a clear example of what you want to do.
Once we’ve narrowed down our list, we head to the location and I take a look. I’m looking for a good location. I’ll do whatever I need to to get that shot. I’m looking for a location that has good light. I want a location that is quiet. I want a location that doesn’t have a lot of visual distractions. I want a location that has something to do with the story. I want the story to be told.
In our case, we look for a location where a lot of people are going to be gathered, which would include people of color.
